Nematode-based indices in soil ecology: Application, utility, and future directions

The health and functioning of soil ecosystems are the foundation sustainable food production land management. Of key importance in achieving sustainability, is frequent measurement health, indices based on community structure nematodes amongst most widely used toolsets by ecologists. Thirty years after development Maturity Index, we aimed to evaluate application, utility, future directions nematode-based (NBIs). This review focused NBIs that calculated using coloniser-persister classification nematodes. Data from 672 empirical studies terrestrial environments revealed presented a dissimilar usage trend. Channel Index Metabolic Footprints showed strongest increase application rates over time, thus indicating greater interest studying decomposition pathways ecosystem functioning, respectively. Furthermore, were mostly applied agricultural systems associated with herbaceous crops investigating, for example, nutrient enrichment following manure and/or inorganic fertilizer application.
